CellCept (mycophenolate)
Also known as: Mycophenolate mofetil · MMF · CellCept · Myfortic
Mycophenolate, often sold as CellCept, is an important immunosuppressant in modern rheumatology. It has changed how I treat lupus and several connective tissue diseases, giving many patients steadier disease control.
Calm, careful medication review by a consultant rheumatologist.
What this medicine is
Mycophenolate is a tablet that dampens the parts of the immune system that drive autoimmune inflammation. It is usually taken twice a day.
Uses and context
It is widely used in lupus, including lupus nephritis (kidney lupus), scleroderma-related lung disease, inflammatory myositis and some vasculitis. It may also be used after transplants, under other specialists.
How this relates to rheumatology care
Before starting I review your blood counts, liver function, infection screen and pregnancy plans. Doses are built up gradually and monitored closely. Contraception is essential, because mycophenolate is not safe in pregnancy.
What safety checks may matter
Baseline full blood count, liver and kidney function
Hepatitis and TB screening as advised
Reliable contraception before starting and during treatment
Regular blood tests, more frequent in the first few months
Vaccination review before starting
Side effects and red flags
If you have emergency symptoms such as severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, chest pain, stroke-like symptoms, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, sudden vision loss, severe infection symptoms, or severe weakness or confusion, please seek urgent medical care first rather than waiting for a WhatsApp reply.
Persistent fever, chills or signs of infection
Unexplained bruising, bleeding or unusual tiredness
Severe diarrhoea or abdominal pain
New shortness of breath or persistent cough
A new or changing skin lesion
Signs of severe allergic reaction
Things worth knowing day to day
Do not become pregnant while on mycophenolate; it can seriously harm the baby.
Avoid live vaccines while on treatment unless discussed with me.
Protect your skin from the sun; long-term immunosuppression increases skin cancer risk.
Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
