Score joint involvement, serology, acute-phase reactants and symptom duration to classify definite rheumatoid arthritis. Apply only in patients with at least one joint with definite clinical synovitis not better explained by another disease.
For clinicians only. This tool is for healthcare professionals and clinical education only. It does not diagnose, replace clinical judgement, or replace specialist assessment. Any decisions about a patient must be based on full clinical assessment, investigations where appropriate, and current clinical guidelines.
Score ≥6/10 classifies the patient as having definite rheumatoid arthritis.
Patients with erosive disease typical of RA, or long-standing disease previously satisfying the criteria, are classified as having RA independent of the current score.
Small joints: MCPs, PIPs (thumb IPs included), MTPs 2–5, wrists. Large joints: shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles.
Exclude psoriatic arthritis, SLE, gout and reactive arthritis before applying these criteria.
